Overview
The Society of Engineers-UAE is an ITA-AITES member nation since 2011, when it established the SOE UAE Tunnelling Chapter. With a goal to unite the regional tunnelling industry and promote the development and use of underground space, the SOE UAE Tunnelling Chapter organizes the Arabian Tunnelling Conference and supports tunnelling related events. The UAE Tunnelling Chapter is very excited to host the World Tunnel Congress 2018, the first time in the GCC.

INTERNATIONAL TUNNELLING AND UNDERGROUND SPACE ASSOCIATION
Founded in 1974 by the initiative of nineteen Nations, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) which aims are:
to encourage the use of the subsurface for the benefit of public, environment and sustainable development and
to promote advances in planning, design, construction, maintenance and safety of tunnels and underground space, by bringing together information thereon and by studying questions related thereto.
Since then, ITA has considerably developed. Presently, ITA gathers 71 Member Nations and 310 corporate or individual Affiliate Members.
The General Assembly, which met annually, resolves all questions concerning the organisation and conducts of the affairs of the Association; it shall approve the budget of receipts and expenditure, and appoint and organise all Committees of the Association; it shall decide on the admission of new adhering national Organisation and of the new affiliate member.
The General Assembly is hosted by a Member Nation at the occasion of the yearly World Tunnel Congress.

SOE UAE Tunnelling Chapter
Since the establishment of the Society of Engineers in the UAE (SOE - UAE) in 1979, it seeks to provide the best services to its members, in order to achieve excellence in the engineering field in UAE. Among the important achievements of the engineering sector in UAE, the establishment of the Tunneling Chapter of the United Arab Emirates by its chairman Eng. Sulaiman Al Hajri, concurrently with the occasion of presenting SOE - UAE as a member of the International Tunneling Association (ITA), which allows UAE along with ITA to spread the culture of tunnels in the country, and promote projects based on the use of the underground spaces, such as railway projects, of which the Dubai Metro project is the most important railway project at all. For that purpose, the UAE's Tunneling Chapter organizes the Arab Tunneling Conference, and it’s the most prominent event in tunneling in the Middle East, which has achieved great success in previous versions since its inception, to be the gateway for UAE to host "World Tunneling Congress - Dubai 2018", the most prominent forums in the field of tunneling in the world, for the first time for this huge event to be hosted in UAE, and even in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Eng. Sulaiman Al Hajri, chairman of the tunneling chapter, confirms that the tunneling chapter is doing its best through their relentless pursuit, in order to develop the concept of the use of underground space, and the expansion of the tunnels projects, so as to achieve growth and sustainability in the United Arab Emirates.
